AC smells bad? Causes and what to do
By Relax Aircon, Vadodara · Updated 28 October 2026 · About Azhar Munshi, the owner
A smell from the AC usually means moisture, dust or a fault. A musty smell is common after the monsoon. A burning smell is different and needs attention at once.
What the smell can mean
- Musty or damp: mould or bacteria on a wet filter, coil or drain tray.
- Sour or like dirty socks: dust and moisture on the indoor coil.
- Like drains: a blocked drain pipe holding water.
- Burning or electrical: overheating wiring or a motor fault. Switch off at once.
What you can safely try
- Wash and fully dry the filters.
- Run the AC in Fan mode for 20 to 30 minutes after use, to dry the inside.
- Keep the room ventilated for a while after switching the AC on.
When to call a technician
If the smell comes back after cleaning the filters, a technician should clean the coil and drain. If you smell burning, switch the AC off at the wall and call. Our AC service in Vadodara starts from ₹350.
