1 ton or 1.5 ton AC: which suits your room?
By Relax Aircon, Vadodara · Updated 28 October 2026 · About Azhar Munshi, the owner
An AC that is too small runs flat out and never cools the room. One that is too big switches on and off too often. A good starting point is the size of the room.
Rule of thumb by room size
- Up to about 120 sq ft: 1 ton.
- About 120 to 180 sq ft: 1.5 ton.
- About 180 to 250 sq ft: 2 ton.
- Larger rooms, halls and shops: 2 ton or more, or more than one unit.
Go one size up if
- The room is on the top floor or has a roof directly above it.
- It has big windows facing the afternoon sun.
- Many people use the room, or it has heat-producing appliances.
Installation matters too
A correctly sized AC still cools badly if the pipe run is too long or the unit is poorly placed. We install split and window ACs from ₹1,200 and can advise on size and placement before you buy. These are guides, not exact calculations, so ask a technician if the room is unusual.
