Fridge leaking water? Causes and what to check

By Relax Aircon, Vadodara · Updated 28 October 2026 · About Azhar Munshi, the owner

Water around a fridge is usually a blocked defrost drain or a loose water connection. Both are simple for a technician to fix, and some checks you can do yourself.

Common causes

  • Blocked defrost drain, so melted frost runs onto the floor or the shelf.
  • Drain pan under the fridge overflowing or cracked.
  • Water inlet line or filter (on models with a water dispenser) loose or leaking.
  • Door seal not closing, causing extra frost and then extra water.
  • Fridge not level, so water does not drain to the pan.

What you can check

  • Switch off and unplug the fridge before touching anything at the back.
  • Check that the door closes fully and the rubber seal is not torn.
  • Look for ice build-up at the back of the freezer, a sign the drain is blocked.
  • Make sure the fridge is level.

When to call a technician

If the leak returns after you clear obvious causes, or there is a lot of ice, a technician should clear the drain and check the defrost system. Our fridge repair in Vadodara starts from ₹400, and you are told the full price before work.
