AC making noise? What the sound usually means

Some noise is normal, like a soft click when the AC starts or the sound of air. A new loud sound is a warning worth checking early.
What common sounds can mean
- Rattling or vibration: loose panel, loose outdoor unit stand or a loose fan blade.
- Buzzing from the outdoor unit: a weak capacitor or a compressor struggling to start.
- Grinding or squealing: worn fan motor bearings.
- Hissing or bubbling: possible gas leak, or refrigerant moving through the pipes.
- Dripping or gurgling: water draining, or a partly blocked drain pipe.
- Loud click and then silence: the outdoor unit is failing to start.
What you can check
- Look for objects, leaves or a loose cover near the outdoor unit.
- Check the outdoor unit stand is firm and the unit is level.
- Switch the AC off if the sound is grinding, buzzing or you smell burning.
